Changing house to office use

Do you need Planning Permission to change from ‘house’ to ‘office’ Pat, (Kilkenny)

Hi Pat,   The short answer to your question is “Yes”.  In other words if you were going to convert the entire house into office accommodation and move a business into it you will need planning permission.

There is one exception to this and that is that if a professional person  (Accountant, Architect, Doctor etc)  uses the house as his or her professional residence but not as a permanent office or surgery or whatever then they would be entitled to use it for occasional business.

The basis of this simply is that most professional people bring work home with them in the evening and it would be nonsense for the Law to ban that from happening, provided it does not change the overall use as a private residence.

The issues raised in the answer to this NewsTalk listener's question are dealt with in a general way as can only be the case on live radio. Before relying on the advice given in this answer, whether you heard the broadcast or are for the first time reading the issues here please do not rely on the broad advice given.
