Citizenship for civil union couple

I am an Irish Citizen, my same sex partner is non EU. If Irish citizenship is rejected for her – she has been here ten years, is she entitled to citizenship if we have a civil union (whenever that comes in – so we are not holding our breath)? Don’t I have rights to continue my life here with her in Ireland as maybe we will have to move? Maureen.

Hi Maureen - my advice is to be patient.

The Civil Union Bill which is not yet enacted provides specific immigration rights for the registered civil partnerships and unless there are amendments to proposed legislation you and your partner will have the same rights as a married couple for emigration purposes.

Wait for the pen of Mary McAleese to fall on the Bill and it will be law
