Leaving Cert-v-Senior Cert for job

Brian, I recently applied for a job but was denied an interview because I didn’t meet the minimum requirement. Leaving cert. However I sat my senior cert which has equal standing according to the dept of education. Was I discriminated against? Have I any recourse?

I am not sure if the senior cert has absolute equal standing as the Department of Education mentioned.  For example, if your prospective employer wanted you to go on and do a university degree (at the company’s expense) would the senior cert allow this in the same way as the leaving might?  Employers have every right to specify what they require and at third-level for example certain degrees can be specified for teaching positions but similar ones can be refused as part of a qualification.

What I am saying is, it depends on what the advertisement said and if there was implication in leaving cert or similar being accepted then it may be discriminatory.

My advice is to contact the Equality Authority at www.equality.ie
